NRC looks to speed up reactor build-out, scrap decades-old radiation standard - E&E News by POLITICO

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is proposing significant changes to its regulations, aimed at accelerating the construction of new nuclear reactors and updating radiation safety standards. Key changes include allowing applicants to use modern risk-informed methods for safety analyses and the introduction of a "graded approach to dose management" that shifts away from the long-standing principle of keeping radiation exposure as low as possible. This new approach, which will affect various sectors using radioactive materials, is intended to reduce regulatory burdens and costs without compromising safety. NRC Chair Ho Nieh emphasized that the initiative aligns with the administration's goal of increasing nuclear capacity in the U.S. by 2050. The NRC aims to finalize these licensing rules by the end of the year.
